From the viewpoint of the worker, Social Security is a volatile equity anyway. Will it not be paid in US dollars? Whether we like it or not, there are absolutely no guarantees. Social Security is nothing more than a promise, and at this point it looks like a promise that cannot be fulfilled. The productivity of American workers has grown beyond what we could have imagined, but it seems unlikely that a ratio of two workers per retiree can ever be supported. Why not broaden it in some way? The ideological purity of the Democratic Party on this issue is very frustrating.
